Bratislava for Children
BIBIANA, the International House of Art for Children, was established in 1987 as a partner of the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava, a long-established international event. Today, the scope of its activities makes BIBIANA the only institution of its kind in the Slovak Republic and one of only a few such bodies in Europe.
- ZOO and Dinopark
Soon after it opened in May 1960, Bratislava Zoo succeeded in rearing macaques, baboons, porcupines, nutrias, leopards, pumas and even dingoes in captivity, and was one of the first zoos in Europe with a breeding pair of northern lynx. The zoo is particularly noted for its rearing of antelopes, baboons and fallow deer; it is currently home to more than 1,000 animals from over 140 species.
- Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens, part of the Bratislava's Comenius University but open to the public, were founded in 1942. Covering an area of 5.5 hectares close to the Danube River, the gardens feature collections of both coniferous and deciduous trees, perennial plants, azaleas and rhododendrons, alpine vegetation, and winter- and frost-resistant cacti. The on-site greenhouses contain tropical and sub-tropical plants, a collection of cacti and succulents, orchids, bromeliads and tillandsias, ficuses and ferns, palms, cycads, araucarias, Australian flora, and tropical ornamental plants. Guides are available upon request.
- Bratislava Forest Park
Bratislava Forest Park, in the hills above the city, is a great place for both children and adults to relax in unspoilt countryside. Near the entrance to the park is the TV tower on Kamzík Hill (439 m above sea level) which is visible from much of the city. There is a revolving restaurant inside the tower. A short walk from it is a forest clearing with great views where visitors can toboggan down the hill in the winter snow, or via a specially constructed dry bobsleigh run during the rest of the year. There is also a ropewalk through the trees, and several cabins selling drinks and snacks are nearby.
