For classical orchestral music, the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra currently performs at the national theatre's historical building on Hviezdoslavovo Square while its normal home, the nearby Reduta concert hall, undergoes reconstruction. For opera and ballet, the Slovak National Theatre is the place to go.
Jazz has a strong tradition in Slovakia. The two top venues are the Jazz Cafe, with an underground cellar bar in the heart of the old town (at Ventúrska 5), and, a little further from the centre, Hlava XXII (Catch-22, in Slovak), at Bazová 9. Cuban-themed restaurant Malecon, next to the National Gallery, occasionally has live Latin-American music.
There are few venues supporting live rock acts (Randal Club, in the YMCA building at the junction of Šancová and Karpatská, is one exception; the more central Alligator bar, at Laurinska 7, is another), but clubs such as Nu Spirit (on the edge of the old town, at Medená 16, and at its new venue on Šafárik Square) and Dopler (further out, at Prievozska 18) regularly host DJs from out of town. Subclub, in a former nuclear bunker under the castle (see the map on the club's website, under 'Contact'), has a unique atmosphere – and very loud techno.
